LG Washer Door Boot Gasket Replacement — The Mold-Prone Boot Seal
The door boot gasket on an LG front-load washer is the thick rubber bellows that creates a watertight seal between the door and the drum. It flexes with every cycle as the drum rotates and water splashes against it. It is also the most mold-prone component on the entire washer because moisture, detergent residue, and warmth create ideal mold growing conditions in its folds.
Why LG Washer Gaskets Get Moldy
The boot gasket has deep folds where water pools after each cycle. Front-load washers use the door as the loading opening (unlike top-loaders), so the gasket sits at the lowest point where water collects. Mold spores in the air colonize this perpetually damp, warm rubber surface.
LG washers trigger a Tub Clean reminder every 30 cycles for this reason. Running the Tub Clean cycle with a washer cleaner tablet or 2 cups of white vinegar helps, but it does not eliminate the need for manual gasket wiping.

When to Replace vs When to Clean
Clean when: Surface mold on the gasket folds (wipe with baking soda paste and a cloth). Mild odor after running Tub Clean.
Replace when: Deep mold embedded in the rubber that does not come off. Tears or cuts in the rubber (usually from underwire bras, sharp zippers, or coins). Gasket is stiff, cracked, or has lost elasticity. Water leaks from around the door during cycles.

Replacement Steps
Disconnect power and water. Open the door. Pry off the outer spring band (retaining clamp) using a flathead screwdriver — find the spring and pry it off. Peel the front of the gasket away from the door frame.
Remove the inner spring band (holds the gasket to the tub). You may need to remove the front panel for better access on some models. Pull the old gasket off the tub opening.
Clean the tub rim and door frame channel. Install the new gasket onto the tub opening first, securing with the inner spring band. Then fold the front lip of the gasket over the door frame and install the outer spring band. The outer band is under tension — use a spring tool or vice-grips.
Close the door and check that the gasket seats evenly around the entire perimeter. Run a Quick Wash cycle with the door window visible to check for leaks.

Mold Prevention Going Forward
After every load: wipe the gasket folds with a dry cloth and leave the door cracked open. Monthly: run the Tub Clean cycle. Use only HE detergent (low suds) — excess suds leave residue in the gasket folds that feeds mold. Do not use more detergent than recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
My LG washer gasket has black mold. Can I bleach it?
Diluted bleach (1:10 with water) applied with a cloth kills mold, but repeated bleach use degrades the rubber and shortens gasket life. Baking soda paste is safer for regular cleaning. Replace the gasket if mold is deeply embedded.
Why does my LG washer smell musty?
Mold in the door boot gasket folds. Wipe dry after each load, leave the door cracked, and run Tub Clean monthly. If the smell persists after cleaning, the gasket needs replacement.
How long does an LG washer door boot gasket last?
Typically 8-12 years with proper care. Skipping gasket wiping and Tub Clean cycles shortens lifespan to 4-6 years due to mold damage.
