Front-load versus top-load locks#

On a front-load LG washer, identified by the WM prefix, the door lock is a multi-component assembly in the door frame. It contains a wax motor — a small actuator that heats up to push a locking pin — plus the pin that engages the door catch and two or three interlock switches that report the door state to the control board. The wax motor takes roughly 5 to 10 seconds to engage after you press start, and that brief delay is completely normal, not a fault.

Top-load LG washers, identified by the WT prefix, use a different lid-lock mechanism, but the logic is the same: the door or lid must be confirmed locked before the machine fills, and it stays locked until the drum stops.

Symptoms of a failing lock#

• The dE error appears and the cycle stops before filling.
• The door will not lock or the lock cycles without catching.
• The washer will not fill because the board never sees a locked door.

Replacing the door lock#

1. Unplug the washer and shut the water.
2. Open the door and peel back the rubber boot from the lock area on a front-load, or access the lid-lock housing on a top-load.
3. Reach the lock assembly, photograph the wiring, and disconnect it.
4. Unmount the old lock and fit the replacement.
5. Reconnect, reseat the boot on a front-load, and test a lock-and-fill cycle.

The manual release and prevention#

If the door is stuck shut with laundry inside, most front-load LG washers have an emergency release: with the power off, open the lower filter door and pull the release cord or tab to unlatch the door manually. Before condemning the lock, remember that the 5-to-10-second engage delay is normal, and that a door which does not close squarely can prevent the pin from seating and trip a dE error even with a healthy lock — so check the door alignment and hinge first. When you install the new lock, keep the wiring in its original routing and reseat the boot seal fully into its ring, because a boot that is not seated correctly leaks during the wash and is a common self-inflicted problem after a lock job. A lock that is beginning to fail intermittently is worth replacing before it strands a load behind a locked door.

Testing and matching the part#

Before replacing an LG door lock, confirm it with a meter rather than by symptom alone. On a front-load wax-motor lock you can test the interlock switches for continuity as the lock engages, and a lock that never draws power points upstream to the board or wiring rather than to the lock itself. Matching the part matters too: the WM front-load lock and the WT top-load lid lock are entirely different assemblies, so order against your specific model and prefix rather than a generic listing. It is also worth inspecting the door strike and the hinge while you have the panel open, because a sagging door or a worn strike keeps the pin from seating and reproduces the dE error even after a good lock is installed. Confirming the fault, matching the prefix, and checking the door alignment together turn a guess into a repair that works the first time.
