LG Washer Door Latch Replacement — dE Error and Door Lock Assembly

The door latch on an LG washer is an electrically actuated lock assembly — far more complex than a dishwasher latch. It contains a solenoid or wax motor that physically locks the door, plus interlock switches that report door status to the control board. The door must be locked before the washer fills with water, and it stays locked until the drum stops spinning. When the lock assembly fails, you get the dE (Door Error) code.

Front-Load vs Top-Load Door Locks

Front-load (WM prefix): The door lock is a multi-component assembly mounted in the door frame. It contains a wax motor (a small actuator that heats up to push a locking pin), a locking pin that engages the door catch, and 2-3 interlock switches. The wax motor takes 5-10 seconds to engage after you press Start — this delay is normal.

Top-load (WT prefix): The lid lock is simpler — a solenoid actuator with a plunger that engages a slot in the lid. It locks faster than the front-load wax motor. The switch mechanism reports lid position to the board.

• dE error code — door lock assembly is not reporting locked status to the board
• Door will not lock — you hear clicking but the lock does not engage

Testing the Door Lock

Disconnect power. Access the door lock from behind the front panel (front-load) or under the top panel (top-load). Disconnect the wire harness. Test each interlock switch individually with a multimeter for continuity. The wax motor can be tested by applying 120V briefly from an isolated source (professional test only) and observing if the pin extends.

Replacement

Front-load: Remove the top panel. Remove the rubber door boot clamp (spring band on the rubber gasket). Peel back the gasket to access the lock assembly. Remove the 2-3 mounting screws. Disconnect the wire harness. Install the new assembly.

Top-load: Remove the top panel screws. The lid lock is visible on the underside of the top panel or on the cabinet frame. Remove mounting screws, swap the assembly.

Emergency Door Release

If the door is stuck locked with laundry inside: unplug the washer for 5 minutes. On many LG front-load models, the wax motor cools and the lock retracts automatically. If not, there is a manual release tab — a small plastic pull-tab inside the door lock assembly accessible through the bottom front panel.
