LG Washer Control Board Replacement
An LG washer has two boards, and the symptom tells you which: display, button, and ThinQ trouble is the main board, while PE or LE codes and a drum that won't drive point to the motor-control (inverter) board. Either way, the new board needs a tCL calibration to learn the motor.
Sorting main-board from motor-board failures first saves you buying the wrong one.
Main control board vs. motor-control board#
Main board faults look like electronics giving out:
- Display flickering or blank
- Buttons partly or fully unresponsive
- A cycle that starts but skips stages or runs forever
- Random error codes that change each load
- No ThinQ connection even with working Wi-Fi
Motor-control (inverter) board faults show up as drive problems:
- PE (Position Error) — the board can't read rotor position from the hall sensor
- LE (Locked Motor Error) — the board can't drive the motor
- The drum won't spin with no mechanical obstruction, or spins only one direction
Do You Have the Right Tools?

Check these before buying a board#
For a PE error, test the hall sensor first — it fails far more often than the board. For LE, hunt for a mechanical jam (a coin or an underwire wedged between drum and tub). For display trouble, confirm there's power at the outlet. And because a surge can blow a board's onboard fuse, check whether yours has a replaceable PCB fuse before condemning the whole board.
Replacing the main board#
Unplug the washer and remove the top panel (2 Phillips screws at the rear, then slide it back). The main board is in the control console: take out the console screws, tilt it forward, photograph every connector, unplug them, swap the board, and reassemble. Afterward, re-pair with ThinQ by deleting the washer in the app and adding it fresh, then run the calibration below.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Replacing the motor-control board#
The inverter board sits behind the rear panel near the Direct Drive motor. Pull the rear panel, unplug the harness, swap the board, and reconnect.
The tCL calibration#
Both boards need it after a swap so the electronics learn the motor: with the drum empty, press Spin Speed and Soil Level together for about 3 seconds until tCL appears, then press Start. Let it run to completion.
Tools: Phillips #2, Torx T15 (LG uses Torx on some console screws), a multimeter, and a camera for the connectors.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Parts and cost#
| Board | LG number | Cost & effort |
|---|---|---|
| Main control board | EBR86692708 | Board only — console access |
| Motor-control (inverter) board | EBR78263901 | Board only — rear-panel access |
| WashTower main board | EBR86692720 | Stacked-unit variant |
Protect the replacement#
LG washer boards are unusually sensitive to voltage spikes, and a surge is the most common reason they die — a dedicated surge protector at the outlet is cheap insurance, especially where thunderstorms or unstable grid power are common. One warranty note: LG's 10-year coverage applies only to the Direct Drive motor, so the control boards fall under the standard 1-year term.
Don't Void Your Warranty
Opening your appliance yourself may void the manufacturer warranty. Our repair comes with a 90-day guarantee, and we document everything for warranty compliance.

Why LG splits the work across two boards#
LG's Direct Drive design bolts the motor straight to the drum and lets the inverter board vary its speed and direction electronically instead of through belts and a transmission. That's why a motor-drive fault surfaces as a clean PE or LE code rather than a mechanical noise, and why the inverter board is a separate part from the main board that runs the display and cycle logic. Knowing which board owns which job is half the diagnosis.
