LG Washer Control Board Replacement — Main Board vs Motor Control
LG washers use two separate boards: the main control board (EBR prefix) that handles cycle logic, user inputs, and sensor readings, and the motor control board (inverter) that drives the Direct Drive motor. A failed main board typically causes display issues, unresponsive buttons, or erratic cycle behavior. A failed motor control board causes the PE (Position Error) or LE (Locked Motor Error) codes because the motor cannot receive proper drive signals.
Two Boards, Different Symptoms
Main control board failure:
- Display flickering or completely blank
- Buttons partially responsive or unresponsive
- Cycle starts but skips stages or runs indefinitely
- Random error codes that change each cycle
- Cannot connect to ThinQ despite working WiFi
Motor control board (inverter) failure:
- PE error (Position Error) — board cannot detect rotor position via the hall sensor
- LE error (Locked Motor Error) — board cannot drive the motor
- Drum does not spin despite no mechanical obstruction
- Drum spins in one direction only

Main Board Replacement
Disconnect power. Remove the top panel (2 Phillips screws at rear, slide back). The main board is in the control console at the top. Remove the console mounting screws, tilt forward, photograph all connectors, disconnect, swap the board, reconnect, reassemble.
After replacement, re-pair with ThinQ — delete the washer and add it fresh. Run a calibration cycle: empty drum, press the Spin Speed and Soil Level buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds until tCL appears, then press Start. This calibrates the board to the motor.
Motor Control Board Replacement
The motor control board is typically behind the rear panel of the washer, near the Direct Drive motor. Remove the rear panel, disconnect the harness, swap the board, reconnect. Run the tCL calibration cycle after replacement.

Before Replacing Either Board
For PE errors, test the hall sensor first ($10-$20). For LE errors, check for mechanical obstructions (coins, underwire stuck between drum and tub). For display issues, verify power at the outlet. A power surge can blow the board's onboard fuse — some boards have a replaceable fuse on the PCB.
Surge Protection
LG washer boards are highly sensitive to voltage spikes. A dedicated surge protector at the outlet prevents the most common cause of board failure. This is especially important in areas with frequent thunderstorms or unstable grid power.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG washer shows PE error. Which board is bad?
PE = Position Error, usually the motor control board or the hall sensor. Test the hall sensor first ($10-$20) — it fails far more often than the board. If the sensor tests good, the motor control board is likely at fault.
Do I need to calibrate after replacing the LG washer control board?
Yes. Run the tCL calibration cycle: empty drum, press Spin Speed + Soil Level for 3 seconds, then press Start. This lets the new board learn the motor parameters.
Is the LG washer control board covered by the 10-year warranty?
No. The 10-year warranty covers only the Direct Drive motor. Control boards are covered under the standard 1-year warranty.
