Kenmore Washer Won’t Start — Causes & Fix

A Kenmore washer that won't start is really three different machines, and the model-number prefix tells you which: 110 is Whirlpool, 796 is LG, and 417 is Electrolux. Across all of them the fault is usually a lid or door lock, a failed noise or line filter that leaves the unit dead, or the control board — but the parts and diagnostics differ by platform, so identify the OEM first.

Why the OEM Prefix Matters#

Kenmore is a Sears label built by several manufacturers, so two washers that look alike can share almost no internal parts. The first three digits of the model number decide which lid or door lock, which noise or line filter, which error codes, and which diagnostic sequence apply — get that wrong and you end up testing the wrong part. When two symptoms seem to disagree — a lit panel that still will not start alongside a wash that feels dead — the OEM's own diagnostic mode is what settles it. Parts for all three platforms come through Sears Parts Direct, and most Kenmore washers carry a 1-year limited warranty on parts and labor, so check your purchase date before paying out of pocket.

Read the Display First#

Before anything else, note whether the panel lights up. Lights on but no start points to the lid or door interlock; completely dead — no display, no sound — points to power or the sacrificial noise filter rather than a lock. A five-minute power cycle (unplug, then replug) clears a locked-up board on any of the platforms and is always worth trying.

Most Common Causes#

110 Series (Whirlpool)#

These use a magnetic lid lock (W10838613) and throw an F5E2 when the lock fails, so the washer fills and sits without starting the cycle. The rear-panel noise filter (W10489846) is a sacrificial part that can leave the machine completely dead. Enter diagnostics with the 1, 1-2-3 button pattern to read stored codes and confirm the lock or filter before replacing either.

796 Series (LG)#

LG-built units use a door lock with a PTC heater and bimetallic strip, and a failed lock shows dE or dE1. The rear-panel line filter (6201EC1006T) is the sacrificial part here. LG's SmartDiagnosis through the ThinQ app works on these Kenmore models, and a CL on the display is just the child lock — hold the Child Lock button for three seconds to clear it before assuming a fault.

417 Series (Electrolux/Frigidaire)#

These use a door lock with a solenoid and a bi-metal switch, and lock or start failures show as E40 or E41. If the machine is dead, check the control board's power-supply section after ruling out the filter.

Diagnostic Order#

Identify the OEM from the first three digits, read the display (lit versus dead), test the lid or door lock by listening for engagement and checking codes, power-cycle for five minutes, and — if the unit is dead — do a continuity test on the rear-panel noise or line filter, since that sacrificial part fails before the board does.

Keep It Running#

• Leave the lid or door open after each cycle so the drum and gasket dry and mold cannot form.
• Run a monthly cleaning cycle with a washer cleaner, or baking soda and vinegar, to dissolve residue.
• Inspect the water supply hoses yearly and replace rubber hoses every 5 years.
