Most Likely Cause#
A Kenmore refrigerator leaking water is most often a clogged defrost drain, but the exact part depends on who built your unit. Kenmore is a badge on other manufacturers' platforms: 106-series models are Whirlpool-built, and 795-series models are LG-built, and they route water differently. On the Whirlpool 106 platform, ice forms in the drain tube near the compressor; on the LG 795 platform, the condensation trough along the evaporator overflows.
Reading the model prefix first — 106 versus 795 — tells you which drain design you have and where to look. After the drain, a water filter housing leak, an inlet-valve drip, and a failing door gasket round out the causes.
Kenmore Refrigerator Leak Sources by Platform#
| Where you see water | Cause | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Freezer floor or floor, 106-series | Whirlpool-platform defrost drain clogged with ice | Most likely |
| Evaporator area, 795-series | LG-platform condensation trough overflow | Most likely |
| Inside the fridge, from the filter | Water filter housing leak | Common |
| Behind the unit, continuous drip | Water inlet valve weeping | Occasional |
| Shelves and door seams | Door gasket letting humid air in | Less common |

How the Two Kenmore Platforms Drain#
The platforms handle defrost meltwater in distinct ways, which is why the fix differs. On the Whirlpool-built 106-series, meltwater runs down a drain tube that exits near the compressor; ice forms at that exit and backs the water up into the freezer, where it eventually overflows onto the floor. On the LG-built 795-series, the drain is a trough that runs along the bottom of the evaporator, and when the defrost heater or sensor fails, that trough fills with ice and overflows. Both platforms also use a water filter, but the housings differ — 106 units take twist-lock filters in the grille, while 795 units use push-in filters such as the LT700P in the upper fridge. Knowing your platform points you to the right drain and filter.
Check It Yourself First#
Before troubleshooting your Kenmore refrigerator, disconnect power at the circuit breaker or unplug the unit.
- Identify your platform. Check the model number: a 106 prefix is Whirlpool-built, a 795 prefix is LG-built. This decides where the drain is and how to clear it.
- Clear a 106-series drain. Remove the freezer back panel and check for ice at the drain opening near the bottom of the evaporator housing. Pour warm water into the opening and clear debris with a pipe cleaner.
- Clear a 795-series trough. Remove the rear freezer panel and melt ice in the evaporator drain trough with a hair dryer, then flush with warm water. Recurring freezing points to a defrost fault.
- Check the filter. Confirm the filter is the correct type for your platform — twist-lock for 106, push-in such as LT700P for 795 — and fully seated. A cracked housing needs replacing; sealant is not a reliable fix.
- Inspect the inlet valve and gasket. A continuous drip behind the unit is a weeping inlet valve; water on the shelves with a failing seal points to the door gasket.

Repair or Replace?#
Clearing a drain is free, and a filter or gasket is a low-cost part. A defrost-system repair or an inlet valve is moderate. On either Kenmore platform, these are well worth repairing against a new refrigerator — get a quote before a defrost-component job, but a leak rarely means a failing unit.
When to Call a Pro#
Call for service if the drain keeps refreezing after clearing, which points to a defrost-system fault, or if the inlet valve or a cracked filter housing needs replacing. Defrost and sealed-area work is best handled by a technician.
