Kenmore Refrigerator Control Board Replacement
On a Kenmore refrigerator the "control board" depends on who built it — 106 is Whirlpool, 795 is LG Elite — and ordering under that maker's part number instead of the Kenmore label usually cuts the price 30–40%. A dead board or one causing erratic cooling is the swap; gradual warming is usually the defrost board.
Kenmore doesn't manufacture anything — the model-number prefix tells you the real maker and which parts to order.
Decode the prefix first#
- 106 — Whirlpool. Main board on the rear wall behind a cover, UI board behind the front panel; uses Whirlpool W10/WP numbers.
- 795 — LG (Kenmore Elite). Main PCB behind a rear cover plus a display board in the door, often on LG's linear-compressor platform.
- 253 — Whirlpool, same parts as 106.
- 363 — GE, now increasingly rare.
The main board runs compressor cycling, defrost timing, fan control, and temperature. A Whirlpool W10503278 bought under the Whirlpool label runs about 30–40% less than the Kenmore-branded board.

Signs the main board has failed#
- Temperature swings wildly — too cold, then too warm — with no setting changes.
- The display is dead or throwing error codes.
- The compressor runs nonstop or won't start, after you've cleared the compressor, start relay, and overload.
- Defrost never starts, so ice builds on the evaporator coil behind the freezer panel.
- The fans stay still though the motors are fine — apply 12V straight to a fan; if it spins, the board isn't feeding it.
The defrost board — the usual real culprit#
When a Kenmore warms gradually over 1–2 weeks — freezer still cold, fresh-food side creeping up, frost on the freezer back wall — the defrost control board has usually failed, not the main board. It decides when and how long the defrost heater runs; when it quits, ice packs the evaporator and chokes airflow to the fresh-food compartment. On Whirlpool builds the defrost function may be a separate adaptive board; on LG builds it's inside the main board, so the whole board is replaced.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Replacing the main board#
- Unplug the refrigerator and pull it away from the wall.
- Remove the rear cover panel (4–8 screws) to expose the board.
- Photograph every harness, then disconnect the 5–8 connectors.
- Back out the mounting screws and fit the new board, matching your photos.
- Replace the cover, push the fridge back, and plug in.
- Give it 24 hours to reach a stable temperature before judging the cooling.
The front UI or display board comes off after removing its panel screws (in the door on LG builds — treat those ribbon cables gently). Tools: Phillips #2, 1/4-inch nut driver, and a phone for photos; 30–60 minutes.
Error codes on LG-built Elite units#
LG-built 795 Elite refrigerators surface faults as Er codes — a condenser-fan or freezer-fan error, an ice-maker sensor fault, or a communication error between the main and display boards. A communication error in particular often means a ribbon cable worked loose during an earlier repair rather than a dead board, so reseat the cables before ordering a replacement.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Parts and cost#
| Board | Platform | Cost & effort |
|---|---|---|
| Main control board | 106/253 Whirlpool, 795 LG | Order by maker's number — 30–40% less |
| Display/UI board | Front panel or door | Board only — easy-to-moderate |
| Defrost control (adaptive) | Whirlpool builds | Check before condemning the main board |
Before you buy anything#
Try a hard reset: unplug for 5 minutes, then plug back in to clear transient memory errors and reset the compressor start timer. If it behaves afterward, watch for the problem returning. Boards last about 10–15 years on Whirlpool builds and 7–12 on LG's more complex electronics, and power surges are the number-one killer — a surge protector is cheap insurance. On 795 Elite units with a linear-compressor failure, check whether your serial number falls under LG's class-action settlement before paying for parts.
