Kenmore fridges come from several makers, and the compressor type — and your options — depend on which.

Decode the model first#

• 106 — Whirlpool: standard reciprocating or rotary compressor.
• 253 — Frigidaire/Electrolux: budget models.
• 795 — LG (Kenmore Elite): LG's linear compressor, the one with the class-action settlement over high failure rates.
• 401 — Samsung: select models.

The 795 Elite is the one to flag: LG's linear compressors failed at high rates, typically between years 3 and 7, prompting an extended warranty and a settlement (Sears was a named retailer). Before paying out of pocket, check your model against LG's warranty-extension list and the settlement, and note that some models carry a 10-year compressor-only warranty even where the general one is a single year.

Check these before condemning the compressor#

• The condenser coils — dirty coils overheat the compressor and cause short-cycling; clean them and retest.
• The start relay and overload protector — these small parts on the compressor's side are far more common failure points, and a bad relay produces the identical click-buzz-click.
• The condenser fan — if it isn't spinning, the compressor overheats.

The start relay — test it first#

The start relay plugs onto the compressor's electrical pins at the rear. When it fails, the compressor clicks on for a fraction of a second and shuts off, repeating that click-buzz-silence every few minutes. To check it: unplug the fridge, pull it forward, remove the rear access panel, unplug the relay, and shake it — a rattle means it's broken. Swapping it is a five-minute repair that clears roughly 30% of Kenmore no-cooling complaints, so always rule it out before assuming the worst.

Why the compressor itself is professional-only#

Compressor replacement is not a DIY job. It requires recovering and recharging the refrigerant (R134a or R600a), which legally demands EPA Section 608 certification, plus brazing the sealed-system copper lines and leak-testing with nitrogen. That's exclusively professional work.

Symptoms of a truly failed compressor#

• The fridge doesn't cool at all, both compartments warming.
• The compressor short-cycles — clicks on, hums a moment, clicks off — trying and failing to start.
• Loud buzzing or knocking from the rear-bottom.
• It runs nonstop but stays warm, having lost compression from worn valves or pistons.
• A burning smell from the rear, meaning overheated windings.

Replace, or replace the fridge?#

Compressors last a long time when cared for — about 12–20 years on Whirlpool builds, 10–15 on Frigidaire, but only 5–15 on LG's linear (with that 3–7 year trouble window). Clean the condenser coils every 6 months, leave 2–3 inches of clearance for airflow, keep a surge protector in line, and hold the fridge at recommended temperatures (37°F fresh food, 0°F freezer) rather than colder than needed.

One more caveat on the LG-built Elite: its tighter packaging and fragile ribbon cables make even the surrounding diagnostic work slower and more delicate than on the Whirlpool builds, so factor that into any quote. And if you can't pin down the correct OEM part from your model prefix, let a technician cross-reference it — ordering the wrong compressor or start relay is an expensive mistake to make twice.
