Jenn-Air Cooktop Burner Won’t Ignite — Causes

A Jenn-Air gas cooktop that clicks but will not light is usually a burner-cap or ignition problem you can chase down without pulling the cooktop apart. The most common culprit is a burner cap reseated slightly out of position after cleaning; carbon on the spark electrode and a tired spark module round out the short list.

Likely Causes, Ranked#

1. Burner cap misalignment on the brass base#

The cap has to sit flush and correctly indexed on the brass sealed burner base so the gas ports line up with the electrode gap. After a cleaning or a boil-over it is easy to set the cap back slightly rotated, which throws off that alignment and gives you clicking with no flame — or ignition on one side of the ring only. Lift the cap, clean the mating surfaces, set it on a flat surface to confirm it does not rock, and reseat it with the alignment features engaged. No part cost if the cap is undamaged.

2. Spark electrode carbon buildup#

The electrode fires a high-voltage arc to light the gas-air mix, and cooking residue on the tip insulates it and weakens the spark. Clean the tip with a dry cloth or fine sandpaper — never water near the ignition system — and check the gap, which should sit about 1/8 inch from the burner cap. A cracked porcelain insulator lets the spark ground to the burner body instead of jumping the gap.

3. Spark module failure#

The spark module generates the high-voltage pulses (15-20kV) that feed each electrode. As it degrades the spark weakens — you see a faint arc or hear clicking with no visible spark. Compare spark intensity across burners: if one pair is weak while the rest are strong, that module channel has failed. The module is potted and not serviceable, so it is replaced as a unit.

4. Moisture in the igniter well#

Liquid from a boil-over can seep into the igniter well and create a conductive path that shorts the spark to ground instead of arcing at the tip, so the burner clicks and clicks but will not light. Lift the cap and dry the electrode area thoroughly; for stubborn moisture, aim a hair dryer on low into the well for two to three minutes.

5. Gas valve solenoid not energizing#

Each burner's dual-coil valve uses a safety coil and a main coil in sequence — the safety coil opens first, then the main coil a moment later for full flow. If either coil fails, no gas reaches the burner. Test each coil with a meter (expect roughly 1-3 ohms); an open circuit means the valve is replaced. A click at the valve with no gas usually means a mechanical blockage in the seat rather than a coil fault.
