Fixing Long Dry Times on a Samsung Dryer

Bottom line: When a Samsung dryer runs its full cycle and still leaves clothes damp, the cause is almost always airflow or the moisture sensor before it is a failed heating part. Work through a 20-45 minute check — sensors and vent first, then the electrical components — before ordering anything.

1. Observe and document the behavior#

Before opening a panel, pin down exactly what happens: an Auto Dry cycle running the full timer without ever sensing dryness, clothes still damp after a timed cycle, or a Samsung Vent Sensor flagging high restriction. Note any error code, since Samsung codes are specific, and read it with the Smart Care app if one is showing.

2. Clear the easy causes first#

Confirm the door closes fully and the switch clicks, because a door that will not latch blocks operation entirely. Wipe the two moisture sensor bars inside the drum with rubbing alcohol — a greasy film from dryer sheets fools them into ending cycles early or running long. Then check the lint filter and the full exhaust vent for restriction, the single most common cause of long dry times. Pull the vent from the back of the dryer and inspect the whole run to the wall cap; a partially crushed foil duct or a lint-choked cap chokes airflow so the dryer tumbles for an hour without ever drying the load.

3. Test the components systematically#

With the simple causes ruled out, unplug the dryer and remove the rear element cover plate, typically four to six Phillips screws. Test the thermal fuse for continuity — it should read 0 ohms — then check the high-limit thermostat for continuity and the heating element for resistance. An open element or fuse explains no heat and endless drying.

4. Identify the single failed part#

Use your readings to name the one component that failed. Samsung dryers rarely fail in multiples unless a power surge hit them, so several open readings suggest a surge and a look at the control board. By frequency the usual offenders are the thermal fuse (DC47-00019A), the heating element, then a worn drive belt.

5. Verify before ordering parts#

Do one last confirmation. Disconnect an electrical part fully and test it in isolation, since a component wired in parallel can give a false reading in place. For anything mechanical, try a temporary reseat to confirm it is really the source before you buy. This matters most with the heating element and thermal fuse, which can read misleadingly while still wired into the harness, so an isolated reading saves you from replacing a good part.

If it still dries slowly#

• Runs long but heats: almost always a restricted vent — clean the full duct to the wall cap, not just the lint screen.
• Auto Dry ends early with damp loads: the moisture sensor bars are still coated; wipe them again with alcohol.
• No heat at all: recheck the thermal fuse and element, which read open when they fail.
• Vent Sensor keeps warning: the duct is restricted somewhere along its length even if the lint screen looks clean — inspect the full run.
