Maytag Dryer Won't Heat: How to Troubleshoot
A Maytag dryer (MED electric or MGD gas) that tumbles but will not heat is almost always one bad part in the heat circuit — most often a blown thermal fuse from a clogged vent. Work through the checks in order with a multimeter and you will find it in 30-60 minutes. Difficulty: intermediate.
Diagnose in order — do not guess#
Maytag dryers do not post an error code for a broken heat part; they just run cold, so a multimeter is essential. Unplug the dryer first (and shut the gas valve on a gas model), then work the checks below from the cheapest and most common down.

The checks#
1. Power#
Electric Maytags need 240V from two breakers (or a double-pole). If one leg is tripped, the motor still runs on 120V but the element gets nothing — reset both breaker handles. On a gas model, confirm the valve behind the dryer is open and the gas is on.
2. Thermal fuse (most common)#
Reach the thermal fuse from the rear panel (electric) or lower front (gas) and check it for continuity: a beep means good, an open reading means blown. A blown fuse means the exhaust vent was restricted — clean the whole vent run before you fit a new fuse, or it will blow again.
3. Heating element (electric MED)#
Disconnect one element wire and meter its resistance: about 8-20 ohms is healthy, infinite means the coil is broken, and continuity from a terminal to the housing means it is grounded — replace it either way.
4. Gas valve coils and igniter (gas MGD)#
Start a heat cycle and watch the burner. No glow at all — meter the igniter (about 50-400 ohms; open means failed). Glows bright but no gas — the gas valve coils have failed (the most common gas-dryer fix). Lights then goes out — an intermittent coil or a flame-sensor issue.
5. Cycling thermostat#
It cycles the heat on and off; at room temperature it should read continuity. Open at room temperature means it has failed and the heat will not come on.
6. High-limit thermostat#
A secondary safety that trips at a higher temperature — also continuity at room temperature. If it is open, it tripped from overheating, which usually rides along with a restricted vent.
7. Timer or control board#
If every heat part tests good, the timer or main board may not be feeding the circuit. Meter for 240V (electric) or 120V (gas valve) at the heater terminals during a heat call; no voltage there points at the board or timer contacts.

After the fix#
Clean the exhaust vent no matter which part failed, run a timed heat cycle and confirm warm airflow at the exterior vent cap, then run an auto-dry load to confirm the moisture sensing ends correctly. Watch it for two or three loads to be sure it holds.
