How to Replace an LG Washer Inlet Valve

LG front-loaders use a triple-solenoid inlet valve: one solenoid for a cold-only fill, one for hot-only, and one that sends cold water to the detergent dispenser. When a solenoid burns out, the washer may throw error code IE (inlet error) or simply fail to fill at the right temperature. LG's Inverter Direct Drive motor has nothing to do with the valve, but its control board runs the valve relays too — so if that relay fails, a new valve alone will not fix the fill, which is why diagnostics come before parts.

Tools, Parts, and Safety#

Have a Phillips #2 screwdriver, a 10mm wrench, needle-nose pliers, a multimeter, a bucket, and towels. The part is the LG inlet valve — 5221ER1003A for most WM front-load models, or 5220FR2075L for WT top-load models — always checked against your model number. On safety: Unplug the washer and shut off both hot and cold water supply valves before beginning. Residual water will drain from disconnected hoses. Plan on 30-45 minutes.

Step 1 — Disconnect the Supply Hoses#

Close both supply valves and unplug the washer, then pull it out for rear access. Disconnect both fill hoses from the valve inlets with a bucket ready for the water still in them, and mark which hose is hot (left) and which is cold (right).

Step 2 — Remove the Top Panel#

On a front-load WM, take out the two Phillips screws at the rear of the top panel, slide it back about an inch, and lift it off; the inlet valve sits at the upper rear, usually on the left. On a top-load WT, remove the screws at the rear of the control panel and tilt it forward, then take out the two top-panel screws, slide the panel back, and lift it off.

Step 3 — Test Each Solenoid#

Set the meter to resistance and unplug each solenoid's connector. A good coil reads roughly 800-1,500 ohms. An open reading of OL or infinity means the solenoid is burned out; a reading under about 200 ohms means it has shorted. Because each of the three coils drives a different water path, test all three even if only one function — hot, cold, or dispenser — seems to have quit.

Step 4 — Disconnect the Wiring and Internal Hoses#

Photograph every connection first. Release the solenoid connectors by their locking tabs, then slide the spring clamps back on the internal fill hoses with needle-nose pliers and pull each hose off. LG front-loaders typically run three internal hoses to the dispenser housing.

Step 5 — Remove the Old Valve#

Back out the two Phillips screws holding the valve bracket to the frame. Some LG models also use a clip that has to release before the valve slides out. Draw the valve assembly out through the rear.

Step 6 — Install the New Valve#

Set the new valve in the correct orientation, its inlet ports lined up with the external hose connections, and secure it with the screws or clip. Reconnect the internal hoses to the right outlets — LG uses a different nipple diameter for each so they cannot be crossed — slide the spring clamps home, and reconnect every wire.

Step 7 — Reconnect and Test#

Reattach the external fill hoses (hot left, cold right), hand-tight plus a quarter turn. Open the supply valves and check for leaks, then rebuild the top panel and plug the washer in. Run a Normal cycle and confirm it fills at the correct temperatures.

LG Diagnostics#

A few LG codes point at the fill circuit: IE means the washer did not fill in the expected time, 1E is the same fault on some displays, and FE is an overfill — a valve stuck open or not closing. To watch the valves directly, enter diagnostic mode: with the drum empty and the door closed, press and hold Spin Speed and Soil Level together for about three seconds, then advance to the fill-valve test, where each solenoid fires in turn.

A Note on TurboWash#

LG TurboWash 360 models add spray jets inside the drum fed from the same water system. If your model has TurboWash and the jets never spray during a cycle, check that the TurboWash valve solenoid works too — depending on model year it may be built into the main valve or be a separate part.
