How to Repair a Whirlpool Dryer Timer
A Whirlpool dryer that tumbles and heats but never advances through its cycle — or refuses to shut off at the end — usually has a failed timer motor or worn timer contacts. Replacing the console-mounted timer is an intermediate job of about 30 to 45 minutes.
On mechanical-dial Whirlpool dryers, a small synchronous timer motor slowly rotates the dial through the cycle and opens or closes contacts that hand power to the heater and motor circuits. When the timer motor stalls, the dial parks in one place and the dryer either runs indefinitely or never reaches the off position; when the contacts pit, a circuit that should switch simply does not. The Wrinkle Shield feature — the periodic tumble after a cycle ends — is also timer-driven, so losing it is another clue the timer is at fault. Before anything else, find your tech sheet: Whirlpool tapes a folded diagram inside the console or against the rear panel, and it carries your model's wiring and diagnostic details.

Before You Start#
Safety warning: Unplug the dryer completely. For gas dryers, shut off the gas supply valve at the wall connection. Allow 30 minutes cool-down if the dryer was recently running.
Step-by-Step#
1. Confirm it is really the timer#
Run a short timed-dry cycle. If the drum tumbles and heat is produced but the dial does not advance, or the dryer never stops, the timer motor is the prime suspect. On models with electronic controls there is no mechanical timer — those use the F#E# code format instead, such as F1 E1 for a control-board fault, F2 E1 for a stuck key, F3 E1 for the exhaust thermistor, F4 E1 for restricted airflow, or a plain AF airflow warning. If you see those, the board and sensors are your target, not a timer.
2. Open the console#
With the dryer unplugged, get into the console where the timer lives. On newer cabinets, slip a putty knife into the seam at the top front corners, about 2 inches in from each edge, to pop the spring clips and lift the top. On older units, remove the two Phillips screws at the rear edge and slide the top back. Then release the console screws and tip the control panel forward to expose the back of the timer.
3. Map and free the timer#
Photograph the timer's terminal block with every wire attached — there can be a dozen spade connectors and their order matters. Pull the timer knob straight off the shaft, remove the two mounting screws holding the timer to the console, and ease it back. Pull each spade connector straight off by its body; never twist or tug the wire.
4. Test before you replace#
On the meter's resistance range, check the timer motor across its two dedicated terminals — a healthy motor reads a steady finite resistance, while an open reading means the motor coil has failed. To check the switching contacts, consult the tech-sheet timer chart, then verify continuity opens and closes across the mapped terminal pairs as you rotate the dial by hand. Dead motor or contacts that never make means the timer is done.
5. Install the new timer#
Set the replacement in the same orientation, drive its two mounting screws, and push each spade connector firmly back onto its matching terminal using your photo as the map. A loose spade connector heats at the contact point and can melt, so seat every one fully. Press the knob back on the shaft.
6. Reassemble and verify#
Tip the console back up, drive its screws, and reseat the top panel onto its clips or rear screws. Restore power and run a short timed cycle with a damp towel. Confirm the dial advances smoothly, heat arrives within a minute or two, the dryer stops at the end, and Wrinkle Shield resumes its periodic tumble.

- If a thermal fuse on the exhaust path has blown, the real root cause is almost always a restricted vent; clear the full vent run before replacing any thermal part.
