GE SmartHQ App Not Connecting: Setup & Fixes
The single most common reason GE SmartHQ can't find your appliance is that your phone is on a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network during setup — the appliance only provisions over 2.4 GHz. Fix that and re-enter provisioning mode before you assume anything is broken.
Start here: the band and the provisioning window#
SmartHQ discovers a new appliance over Bluetooth LE and hands it your Wi-Fi credentials, and the appliance's radio only speaks 2.4 GHz. If your router merges both bands under one name with "band steering," your phone may be parked on 5 GHz when you open the app, and discovery quietly fails. Connect your phone to the 2.4 GHz network first. The appliance also stays in provisioning mode for only about 5 minutes before it times out — if you were interrupted, re-enter it before trying again.
Put the appliance in provisioning mode#
Each product line uses a different key combo, held for 3 seconds until the Wi-Fi icon blinks. GE Profile refrigerators (PVD28BYNFS, PYE22KYNFS): hold Turbo Cool and Turbo Freeze together. GE Profile washers (PTW900BPTDG, PFW870SPTDS): hold Remote Enable. GE Profile dishwashers (PDT715SYNFS, PDT785SYNFS): hold Start and Select Cycle together. Watch for the blinking icon before you open the app — a solid icon means it is already joined, and no icon means the appliance never entered pairing.

Remote start isn't broken — it needs four things at once#
SmartHQ remote start requires the appliance in Remote Enable mode with the icon lit, the door or lid closed, a cycle pre-selected on the machine, and the app showing the device as Connected. If it worked yesterday and stopped, check Remote Enable first: opening the door disables it on washers and dishwashers, and you have to re-press it on the physical panel. On PTW900 washers it also drops out after the machine flags an unbalanced load, and on PDT715 dishwashers it needs rinse aid above the Low mark.
Voice assistants and HomeKit#
SmartHQ links to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant under Connected Services — for example, "Alexa, preheat the oven to 375" on GE Profile ovens. A washer start command fails if the door was opened after the cycle was selected, so close it and press Remote Enable again. GE does not support Apple HomeKit natively; unofficial HomeBridge plugins exist but break with firmware updates.

When it really is the appliance#
If connectivity survives a full Wi-Fi reset — hold the appliance's Wi-Fi button for 10 seconds to erase stored credentials — and it still refuses to provision or shows no radio activity at all, the wireless communication board has likely failed. On GE Profile refrigerators that is the Green Bean board (WR55X35182); on washers the radio is integrated into the main control board (WH22X29556). Profile and Cafe lines carry a 2-year smart-module warranty, so check your registration before paying out of pocket. A connected board is a genuine added part over a non-smart model, but the core motor, pump, and heating repairs cost the same either way.
Step-by-step#
- Join your phone to the 2.4 GHz network, not a merged or 5 GHz SSID.
- Enter provisioning mode with the key combo for your line; confirm the Wi-Fi icon is blinking.
- Open SmartHQ within the 5-minute window and let it discover over Bluetooth.
- If it still fails, hold the Wi-Fi button 10 seconds to reset stored credentials, then retry.
- Confirm your router isn't blocking outbound MQTT (SmartHQ uses ports 443 and 8883).

Frequently Asked Questions#
How do I put my GE appliance in SmartHQ pairing mode?#
Refrigerators: hold Turbo Cool and Turbo Freeze 3 seconds. Washers: hold Remote Enable 3 seconds. Dishwashers: hold Start and Select Cycle 3 seconds. The Wi-Fi icon blinks when pairing is active, and the window lasts about 5 minutes.
Why can't SmartHQ find my appliance?#
Almost always because your phone is on 5 GHz during setup. Move it to the 2.4 GHz network, re-enter provisioning mode, and open the app while the icon is blinking.
Why won't remote start work from the app?#
Four conditions must all be true: Remote Enable lit, door closed, a cycle pre-selected on the machine, and the app showing Connected. Opening the door disables Remote Enable — re-press it on the panel.
Does SmartHQ work with Apple HomeKit?#
No. SmartHQ officially supports only Alexa and Google Assistant. HomeBridge plugins are unofficial and tend to break with GE firmware updates.
The bottom line#
A SmartHQ appliance that "won't connect" is far more often a phone parked on 5 GHz, or a provisioning window that already timed out, than a failed radio board. Move your phone to the 2.4 GHz network, re-enter provisioning mode, and open the app while the Wi-Fi icon is still blinking — that sequence clears the large majority of GE connectivity calls with no parts at all. Save the hardware conclusion for the narrow case where a full 10-second Wi-Fi reset changes nothing and the appliance shows no radio activity, and even then the cooking, washing, and cleaning functions keep working normally while you sort out the connection.
