Cut the power now#
Arcing can start a fire or permanently damage the cooktop, so the first action is to kill the breaker feeding it. Many GE cooktops are hardwired, so the breaker — not a plug — is your disconnect. Do not keep cooking through visible flashes or sparks; treat any arcing as a reason to shut the unit down until it is diagnosed.
Cracked glass is the leading cause#
A crack in the glass-ceramic top lets spills and moisture reach the energized element terminals underneath, and the current arcs across the gap. Thermal shock from a cold spill hitting hot glass, a heavy impact, or dragging cast-iron cookware can all crack the surface. Inspect the glass for cracks, chips, or dark spots; a cracked electric cooktop must not be used until the glass is replaced, because liquids can reach live parts.

A damaged element or its wiring#
A radiant element with a pinhole or a break in its sheathing arcs against the metal tray beneath the glass, showing as bright flashes through the surface. Over years, heat also degrades the wiring insulation, and exposed conductors arc against the element tray or the chassis — sometimes tripping the breaker. Both require opening the cooktop, which should follow the breaker being off.
If the breaker tripped#
A breaker that tripped during the arcing means a short circuit occurred. Do not simply reset it and carry on; a short that keeps returning points to element or wiring damage that must be found and repaired first. Repeated resets on a shorting cooktop risk a fire.
