GE Gas Cooktop Won't Stop Clicking — Causes & Fix

The wet-igniter story#

GE cooktops fire every burner from one spark module through a ceramic igniter beside each burner. When a pot boils over, liquid floods that igniter and the spark shorts to the surrounding metal instead of jumping cleanly to the gas, so the module keeps clicking to try again. Pull the cap and head, blot up the moisture, and let the igniter dry for fifteen to twenty minutes. Most cooktops go quiet the moment the electrode is truly dry.

Check how the cap is sitting#

A cap dropped back on crooked — easy to do after cleaning — steers gas to one side and leaves the spark searching. Lift each cap, set it squarely on its head, and give it a spin; it should turn without wobbling. A properly seated cap lets the burner catch immediately and the clicking stops.

• Clicking on one burner only: dry that igniter and reseat its cap.
• Clicking across the whole cooktop after a big spill: several igniters are damp — dry them all.
• Clicking that continues with every knob off: a switch is stuck or wet, not the igniter.

Clear the port and inspect the electrode#

Food packed into the flame ports or the igniter gap keeps the spark from reaching gas. Run a straight pin through the ports and around the ceramic tip. While you are there, look at the electrode for a crack or a carbon line down its body — a cracked igniter leaks its spark to ground and clicks endlessly until it is replaced.

When it's the module or a switch#

If the burners are clean, dry, and seated and the cooktop still clicks — especially with the knobs off — the fault has moved to the spark switch behind a knob or the module itself. A switch that sticks closed keeps the module powered, and a failing module can free-run. Both are replacement jobs rather than cleaning.
