Shut the gas off first#
Before anything else, cut the gas. Locate the shutoff on the supply line serving the range and turn it perpendicular to the pipe to close it; the flame will extinguish as the gas stops. Why a Gaggenau valve stops sealing#
Each Gaggenau burner is fed by a precision control valve turned by its knob. Inside, the valve seals off flow at the off position. Over years, the internal lubricant hardens or the seat wears, and the valve no longer closes fully even though the knob reaches off — so a small flame or a full flame persists. Or the knob has lost the stem#
A simpler cause is the knob itself. If the plastic collar inside the knob has stripped, the knob turns to off while the valve stem stays partly open, so gas keeps flowing. Pull the knob and turn the bare stem by hand with pliers; if the flame now goes out, the knob is the fault and a new knob restores control. If the flame stays even with the stem fully rotated, the valve is the problem.
Do not force or improvise#
Never wedge, tape, or otherwise jury-rig a burner off. A valve that will not seal is passing gas, and the only safe interim state is the supply shut off. Because this is live gas metering, replacing a Gaggenau valve is a technician's job with the correct part and a leak test afterward.
