Frigidaire Refrigerator Filter Replacement Guide

Knowing which filter your fridge takes is half the battle, because there are two water-filter families by model and a completely different air filter that has nothing to do with your water.

Which PureSource Filter?#

The filter model is molded onto the housing inside the fridge, so read it off the existing filter before you order.

The PureAir Air Filter Is Different#

PureAir Ultra is an air filter, not a water filter — it clears odors from inside the compartment and does not touch your drinking water. It is a small flat cartridge in a housing near the ceiling of the fresh-food section, replaced about every six months (the indicator tracks elapsed time, not actual condition). The quick rule: if the water tastes fine but the fridge smells, replace the air filter; if the water tastes off but the fridge smells normal, replace the water filter.

When to Replace the Water Filter#

• Every six months — Frigidaire's standard interval, whatever your water quality
• When the indicator turns red or amber — it counts water volume dispensed, not the filter's real state
• When dispenser flow slows noticeably — the filter has clogged with sediment
• When the water tastes or smells off — the activated carbon is spent
• After a boil-water advisory — the filter may be contaminated

Replacing a PureSource Ultra (ULTRAWF)#

1. Open the fresh-food door and find the housing in the upper-right corner.
2. Push the old filter in and twist it about a quarter turn counterclockwise, then pull it straight out.
3. Take the protective cap off the new filter.
4. Slide it in and twist clockwise until it clicks.
5. Run 2 to 3 gallons through the dispenser to flush it — the first few glasses may carry harmless carbon fines.
6. Reset the indicator, usually by holding the filter-reset button about 3 seconds.

Replacing a PureSource 3 (WF3CB)#

1. Open the fresh-food door and find the housing on the right wall, by the crisper cover.
2. Press the release button or tab; the filter drops down to pull out.
3. Push the new filter in until it clicks.
4. Flush 2 to 3 gallons through, then reset the indicator.

No tools, about two minutes.

Aftermarket vs. OEM#

Aftermarket PureSource-compatible filters cost less and vary in quality. An NSF-certified one gives equivalent contaminant reduction; a non-certified one may cut flow or filter poorly. Look for NSF 42 (taste and odor) and NSF 53 (contaminant reduction) on the packaging before buying. And if you would rather run without a filter for a while, most models include a bypass plug that goes in the filter's place — the water and ice maker then run unfiltered.

Why This Matters#

It is easy to shrug off a filter, but a clogged one is the most common reason a Frigidaire dispenser slows to a trickle, and spent carbon quietly lets taste and odor back into your water and ice. Because the swap is tool-free and quick, keeping to the six-month interval — or replacing the moment flow drops or taste changes — is the entire maintenance story for these units.

The Ice Maker and a Spare#

Remember the water filter feeds the ice maker as well as the door dispenser, so a badly clogged filter can slow ice production or shrink the cubes long before the dispenser flow becomes obviously weak. If your ice output has dropped off, a stale filter is worth ruling out before you suspect the ice maker itself. Because the swap is so quick and the filter is inexpensive, many owners keep a spare on the shelf and change it the moment flow drops or an off taste appears, rather than waiting on the calendar. If you run the bypass plug for a stretch instead, just know both the dispenser and the ice maker will be pouring unfiltered water until a real filter goes back in.
