Frigidaire Refrigerator Filter Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Frigidaire uses its proprietary PureSource filter line for water filtration. There are two main types based on your model, and a separate PureAir air filter that people frequently confuse with the water filter. Knowing which filter your model uses saves time and prevents ordering the wrong part.
Which PureSource Filter Do You Need?
| Filter | Part Number | Location | Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| PureSource Ultra | ULTRAWF | Inside fresh food compartment, upper right | Gallery, Professional, newer Standard |
| PureSource 3 | WF3CB | Inside fresh food compartment, right side behind crisper cover | Older Standard, some side-by-sides |
The filter type is molded onto the filter housing inside the refrigerator. Look for the printed filter model on the existing filter before ordering.

PureAir Air Filter — The Other Filter
PureAir Ultra is an air filter, not a water filter. It removes odors from inside the refrigerator — it does not filter water. It is a small flat cartridge that slides into a housing near the ceiling of the fresh food compartment. Replace every 6 months (the indicator light tracks usage time, not actual filter condition).
If your water tastes fine but the fridge smells, replace the PureAir air filter. If the water tastes off but the fridge smells normal, replace the PureSource water filter.
When to Replace the Water Filter
- Every 6 months — Frigidaire's recommended interval regardless of household water quality
- When the filter indicator light turns red/amber — the light tracks water volume dispensed, not actual filter condition
- When water flow from the dispenser slows noticeably — the filter is clogged with trapped sediment
- When dispensed water tastes or smells off — activated carbon exhausted
- After a boil water advisory — the filter may have been contaminated

- Open the fresh food compartment door.
- Locate the filter housing in the upper right corner.
- Push the old filter inward and twist counterclockwise (about 1/4 turn). Pull it straight out.
- Remove the protective cap from the new filter.
- Insert the new filter and twist clockwise until it clicks into position.
- Dispense 2–3 gallons of water to flush the new filter (the first few glasses may have carbon particles — this is normal).

Aftermarket vs. OEM Filters
Aftermarket PureSource-compatible filters are widely available at $10–$20 versus $30–$45 for OEM. Quality varies. NSF-certified aftermarket filters provide equivalent contaminant reduction. Non-certified filters may reduce flow rate or not filter effectively. Check for NSF 42 (taste/odor) and NSF 53 (contaminant reduction) certification on the aftermarket filter packaging.

FAQ
What is the difference between PureSource and PureAir filters?
PureSource = water filter (replaces every 6 months, filters tap water for the dispenser and ice maker). PureAir = air filter (removes odors from refrigerator interior, also 6-month replacement).
Can I use my Frigidaire refrigerator without a water filter?
Yes — install a bypass plug (included with many models) in place of the filter. Water will dispense unfiltered. The ice maker will also use unfiltered water.
Why is my Frigidaire water dispenser slow?
Clogged water filter. Replace it. If still slow after replacement, check the water inlet valve for mineral deposits.
Are aftermarket Frigidaire water filters safe?
NSF-certified aftermarket filters are safe and effective. Check for NSF 42 and NSF 53 certification on the packaging.
