Electrolux Refrigerator SY EF: Evaporator Fan System Fault
Electrolux Anti-Ice Fan Logic
When the defrost cycle completes, Electrolux boards execute an anti-ice startup routine: the fan motor receives brief reverse-polarity pulses to rock the blade free of any residual ice before running normally. If the blade is ice-bound and the rocking pulses fail to free it, SY EF triggers.
Frigidaire boards do not include this anti-ice feature. They simply attempt to start the fan and trigger the error if rotation is not detected.

Causes
Ice encasement from defrost failure. The primary cause. Ice builds on the evaporator and eventually reaches the fan blade. The anti-ice pulses can free light frost but not solid ice. Full defrost system diagnosis required.
Motor bearing seizure. Sealed bearings in the freezer environment degrade faster than condenser fan bearings due to ice crystal infiltration. Average lifespan: 8-12 years.
Motor winding open. Thermal cycling during defrost (motor stops during defrost, restarts after) stresses windings.
Diagnosis
- Unplug. Remove freezer rear panel.
- Check for ice on the fan. If iced, manually defrost (24 hours unplugged). Then repair defrost system.
- If no ice: disconnect motor connector. Measure resistance: 4-20 ohms expected.
- Spin blade by hand. Stiff = bearing failure.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

BLDC vs. AC Evaporator Fans
Premium Electrolux models use BLDC evaporator fans that run quieter and support the anti-ice reverse-pulse feature. Standard models use AC fans without reverse capability. The anti-ice feature is only available on BLDC-equipped models.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

FAQ
What are the anti-ice pulses? Brief reverse-polarity signals that rock the fan blade back and forth to break free of light frost after a defrost cycle. Only available on BLDC-equipped Electrolux models.
Can ice break the fan blade? Ice itself rarely breaks the blade, but forcing a frozen blade by powering the motor can damage the motor windings from locked-rotor current.
Does Frigidaire have the anti-ice feature? No. The anti-ice fan startup is unique to Electrolux BLDC fan models.
Electrolux evaporator fan not running? Our technicians carry Electrolux-specific fan motors. Book a repair.
