Amana Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes? Causes
Most likely the spray-arm nozzles are clogged with hard-water minerals, so the jets no longer blast food off your plates — but a fouled filter, incoming water below 120°F, or a worn food-chopper blade on pre-2020 tubs can each leave residue behind, so work through them in that order before replacing anything.
Why an Amana leaves dishes dirty#
Amana runs the Whirlpool wash platform, so a clean load depends on three things working together: spray arms that spin and jet freely, a filter that keeps food out of the recirculated water, and water hot enough to dissolve grease. When any one slips, dishes come out gritty, filmy, or spotted even though the cycle finishes and drains normally.
Causes at a glance#
| Likely cause | What you'll notice | How common | First move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spray-arm nozzles clogged | Film or grit on upper-rack items | Most common | Clear each nozzle with a toothpick |
| Filter system clogged | Redeposited food specks | Common | Pull and rinse the filter |
| Incoming water too cool | Cloudy glasses, grease not cut | Common | Run the sink hot before starting |
| Chopper blade worn | Large particles recirculate (pre-2020) | Occasional | Inspect the chopper assembly |

Working through the causes#
Spray-arm nozzles clogged (most common). Amana uses standard Whirlpool spray arms, and their fine nozzles scale over on the hard water common across Sacramento and the Bay Area. Lift or unclip the lower arm, hold it to the light, and clear every blocked jet with a toothpick or thin wire. Spin both the lower and upper arms by hand afterward to confirm nothing binds their rotation. Filter system clogged (common). Value models such as the ADB1400AGS carry a manual filter that needs weekly cleaning; skip it and trapped food is pumped straight back onto the load. Twist the cylindrical filter counterclockwise, lift it out together with the fine mesh screen beneath it, and rinse both under running water until the water runs clear. Incoming water too cool (common). The wash relies on water at 120°F minimum to break down grease, and value models have weaker internal heaters that cannot recover from a cold first fill. Run the kitchen tap until it is genuinely hot before you press start, so the opening fill arrives at temperature instead of lukewarm. Chopper blade worn (occasional). On pre-2020 tubs a dull or chipped food-chopper blade lets large particles survive and settle back on the dishes rather than draining away. If cleaning the arms and filter does not clear the grit, inspect the chopper assembly for wear and replace it if the blade is damaged.
How to pin it down#
- Disconnect power at the circuit breaker or unplug the unit before any inspection.
- Read the model plate inside the door frame — an ADB1400AGS (manual filter) and an ADB1700ADS (tall-tub with chopper) service slightly differently.
- Pull and rinse the filter, then clear the spray-arm nozzles.
- Restore power, run the kitchen hot tap, then start a normal cycle with rinse aid loaded.
- Check a few glasses afterward; lingering film points to water temperature or scale rather than the arms.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Repair or replace?#
Spray arms, filters, and a chopper blade are inexpensive parts, so on an Amana dishwasher under roughly eight to ten years old the fix is almost always far cheaper than buying a new machine.
Preventing a repeat#
- Rinse the manual filter weekly and clear the spray-arm nozzles monthly.
- Scrape plates before loading so large scraps never reach the filter.
- Run a monthly cleaning cycle with dishwasher cleaner or white vinegar to strip mineral scale.
- Start the kitchen hot tap first so the opening fill arrives at temperature.
