How Alexa Connects to Appliances#

Alexa does not connect directly to your appliance's Wi-Fi. Instead, it connects through the brand's cloud service. The chain is:

Appliance → Home Wi-Fi → Brand Cloud (SmartThings/ThinQ/SmartHQ) → Amazon Cloud → Alexa

This means three things must work simultaneously: (1) appliance connected to your Wi-Fi, (2) brand app signed in and showing the appliance, (3) Alexa skill for that brand enabled and linked.

Samsung SmartThings + Alexa#

Prerequisites: Samsung account, SmartThings app installed, appliance connected to SmartThings.

Setup Steps:

1. Open the Alexa app on your phone
2. Tap More → Skills & Games → Search "SmartThings"
3. Enable the SmartThings skill → Link Account → sign in with your Samsung account
4. Alexa will discover your Samsung appliances automatically
5. Assign appliances to rooms in the Alexa app for easier voice commands

• "Alexa, start the washer" (if remote start is enabled and the washer is loaded)

Common Pairing Failures:

• SmartThings skill shows "account linking failed" — Samsung account must have a verified email. Check Samsung account settings, not SmartThings.
• Appliance appears in SmartThings but not in Alexa — re-discover devices in Alexa app (Devices → Plus icon → Add Device → discover). Allow 30-60 seconds.
• Voice commands work for some appliances but not others — Samsung limits Alexa control to specific model series. Older models (pre-2020) may appear in SmartThings but not support Alexa voice commands.

LG ThinQ + Alexa#

Prerequisites: LG ThinQ account, ThinQ app installed, appliance connected to ThinQ.

Setup Steps:

1. Open Alexa app → More → Skills & Games → Search "LG ThinQ"
2. Enable skill → Link Account → LG ThinQ credentials
3. Discover devices → LG appliances appear

Supported Voice Commands:

• ThinQ skill requires "LG Smart Appliance" Alexa skill on some regions, not "LG ThinQ" — try both if one fails
• LG appliances disconnect from ThinQ after power outages — re-pair in ThinQ app before Alexa will see them
• ThinQ voice commands are slower than SmartThings (2-4 second response vs 1-2 seconds) due to additional cloud routing

GE SmartHQ + Alexa#

Prerequisites: GE SmartHQ account, SmartHQ app installed, appliance connected.

Setup Steps:

1. Alexa app → Skills → Search "GE SmartHQ" or "Geneva" (GE's skill may be listed under either name)
2. Enable → Link Account → GE SmartHQ credentials
3. Discover devices

1. Alexa app → Skills → Search "Whirlpool"
2. Enable → Link Account → Whirlpool app credentials
3. Discover devices

Supported Commands:

Whirlpool Limitation: Whirlpool's Alexa integration supports fewer commands than Samsung or GE. Temperature setting for refrigerators is not supported through Alexa — only through the Whirlpool app.

Troubleshooting Universal Alexa Issues#

"Alexa can't find my appliance"

1. Verify the appliance shows as "connected" in the brand's own app (SmartThings/ThinQ/SmartHQ)
2. Unlink and re-link the brand skill in Alexa
3. Say "Alexa, discover devices" and wait 60 seconds
4. If still not found, restart both the Alexa device and the appliance, then retry

"Alexa says the device is not responding"

1. Check your home Wi-Fi — both the Alexa device and the appliance need internet access
2. Verify the brand app still shows the appliance online
3. Power-cycle the appliance (unplug 30 seconds, plug back in)
4. Re-pair the appliance in the brand app if it shows offline

"Commands work sometimes but not always" This is typically a Wi-Fi reliability issue. Smart appliances use 2.4GHz only. If your router switches between 2.4GHz and 5GHz automatically (band steering), the appliance may drop its connection when the router pushes it to 5GHz. Disable band steering or create a dedicated 2.4GHz SSID for appliances.

Security Considerations#

When you link a brand account to Alexa, you grant Amazon access to your appliance data (usage patterns, temperature settings, cycle history). Review privacy settings in each brand's app to control data sharing.

Important: Remote start via Alexa requires the appliance to accept start commands from the cloud. This means a compromised Amazon or brand account could theoretically start your washer or preheat your oven. Use strong, unique passwords for each brand account and enable two-factor authentication where available (SmartThings and SmartHQ support 2FA; ThinQ does not as of 2026).
