Alexa Smart Appliance Setup Guide

How Alexa connects#

Alexa never touches your appliance's Wi-Fi directly. The chain is: appliance to your home Wi-Fi to the brand cloud (SmartThings/ThinQ/SmartHQ) to Amazon's cloud to Alexa. That is why all three links — appliance online, brand app showing it, and skill linked — must hold simultaneously; a gap at any one leaves Alexa saying "device not responding."

Samsung SmartThings + Alexa#

You will need a Samsung account, the SmartThings app, and the appliance already in SmartThings. In the Alexa app: More > Skills & Games > search "SmartThings" > Enable > Link Account > sign in with your Samsung account; Alexa then discovers your appliances automatically. Assign them to rooms for easier commands. Working commands include "start the washer" (if remote start is enabled and it is loaded), "what is the fridge temperature," "preheat the oven to 375" (with the oven's own safety check), and "is the [dishwasher](/blog/repair-or-replace-dishwasher) done." Common snags: account-linking fails if the Samsung account has no verified email; an appliance in SmartThings but not Alexa needs a re-discovery; and older (pre-2020) models may appear in SmartThings without supporting Alexa voice commands.

LG ThinQ + Alexa#

Need an LG ThinQ account, the app, and the appliance in ThinQ. In Alexa: Skills & Games > search "LG ThinQ" > Enable > Link Account > ThinQ credentials > discover devices. Commands include "turn on the washer" (remote start enabled first), "what cycle is the dryer on," "set the fridge to 37 degrees," and "run Smart Diagnosis." Watch for: some regions list it as "LG Smart Appliance" instead of "LG ThinQ" (try both); LG appliances drop off ThinQ after outages and must be re-paired before Alexa sees them; and ThinQ voice responses run a bit slower than SmartThings due to extra cloud routing.

GE SmartHQ + Alexa#

Need a SmartHQ account, the app, and a connected appliance. In Alexa: Skills > search "GE SmartHQ" or "Geneva" (GE's skill may be under either name) > Enable > Link Account > discover. Commands include "preheat the oven to 400" (Profile ovens with remote preheat), "is the dishwasher running," "start the washer on Normal," and "set the fridge to power cool." GE quirk: the platform is internally "Geneva," so if "GE SmartHQ" is not in your region, search "Geneva Home."

Whirlpool + Alexa#

Need a Whirlpool app account, the app, and a connected appliance. In Alexa: Skills > search "Whirlpool" > Enable > Link Account > discover. Commands include "start the washer," "how much time is left on the dryer," and "set the oven to 350." Whirlpool's integration supports fewer commands than Samsung or GE — notably, refrigerator temperature cannot be set through Alexa, only in the Whirlpool app.

Troubleshooting#

• "Alexa can't find my appliance": confirm it shows connected in the brand app, unlink and re-link the brand skill, say "Alexa, discover devices" and wait about a minute, and if needed restart both the Alexa device and the appliance.
• "Device is not responding": check home Wi-Fi (both Alexa and the appliance need internet), confirm the brand app still shows it online, power-cycle the appliance (unplug about 30 seconds), and re-pair in the brand app if it is offline.
• "Works sometimes, not always": usually Wi-Fi. Smart appliances use 2.4 GHz only, and a router with band steering can shove the appliance onto 5 GHz and drop it — disable band steering or make a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID for appliances.

A quick pre-setup checklist#

Save yourself a failed link by getting the prerequisites in place first: create and verify the brand account (a missing verified email is the top cause of "account linking failed" on Samsung), install the brand app and confirm the appliance is actually connected and controllable there, and make sure your phone and the appliance are on the same 2.4 GHz network during setup. With those true, the Alexa side is usually a two-minute skill link and a discovery. If the link still fails, it is almost always the brand account (password, verification, or a region-specific skill name) rather than Alexa itself, so fix it on the brand side first.

Security#

Linking a brand account to Alexa shares appliance data (usage, temperatures, cycle history) with Amazon, and — because remote start lets the cloud start the appliance — a compromised Amazon or brand account could theoretically start your washer or preheat your oven. Use strong, unique passwords per account and enable two-factor authentication where it is offered: SmartThings and SmartHQ support 2FA; LG ThinQ does not as of 2026. Review each brand app's privacy settings to control what is shared.
