Viking Gas Burner Won't Turn Off? Causes & Fix
Most likely the gas valve behind the knob is stuck open — grease and debris in the valve stem keep it from closing fully — though a damaged control knob or shaft, or a broken internal valve spring, can leave a burner burning too. This is a safety hazard, so shut the gas off at the wall valve before anything else.
Make it safe first#
If a burner will not turn off, immediately shut off the gas at the wall shutoff valve — turn its handle perpendicular to the pipe. If you cannot reach the shutoff, leave the burner as it is, ventilate the room, and get help rather than forcing the knob. Do not use the other burners until the faulty valve is repaired, because gas can escape even when they appear off.

Working through the causes#
Stuck gas valve (most common). The valve opens and closes as you turn the knob, and over time grease and debris work into the valve stem so it no longer seats fully closed. With the gas shut off at the wall, the valve is cleaned or, more reliably, replaced — a partially closing gas valve is not something to leave in service. The fouling tends to build gradually on heavily used burners until the flame will not go out at all. Damaged control knob or shaft (occasional). The knob grips the valve through a D-shaped or splined shaft. If the knob's fitting strips or the shaft is damaged, turning the knob no longer moves the valve to off. Inspect both; a stripped knob or shaft is replaced so the valve responds again. Broken valve spring (occasional). An internal spring helps close the valve when you turn the knob off. If that spring breaks, the valve can drift back open even after you turn it, so gas keeps flowing. A valve with a broken spring is replaced as a unit.
Diagnose it safely#
- Turn the wall shutoff valve to closed — handle perpendicular to the pipe.
- With the gas off, try turning the knob through its full range and feel for a firm off position.
- Check whether the knob spins freely or feels stripped against the shaft.
- Inspect the burner for a knob that sits slightly out of the true off position.
- Leave the gas off and have the valve replaced before using the range again.
