Mesh routers: the usual suspects#
Mesh systems cause the most trouble because they steer bands and isolate clients by default. Common issues:
- Eero: client isolation is on by default and blocks smart-device cloud communication. Turn off band steering during setup in the Eero app's advanced network settings.
- Google Wifi / Nest Wifi: combines 2.4 and 5 GHz with no user-accessible band separation. Work around it by setting the appliance up while standing near a puck (Bluetooth range), then it holds fine afterward.
- Netgear Orbi: works well, but enable "20/40 MHz coexistence" for the best 2.4 GHz behavior.
- UniFi: the most configurable — just create a separate 2.4 GHz-only IoT SSID with client isolation disabled.
The settings that actually matter#
Create a dedicated IoT network and set it up like this:
- Band: 2.4 GHz only.
- Security: WPA2 (not WPA3-only, which many appliances reject).
- Channel width: 20 MHz (40 MHz cuts range and compatibility).
- Channel: auto, or a fixed non-overlapping 1, 6, or 11.
- DHCP lease: long, or use static reservations to stop renewal-driven disconnects.
- AP/client isolation: off. UPnP: on. mDNS/Bonjour: on (some apps use it for discovery).

Step by step#
- Create the dedicated IoT SSID: 2.4 GHz only, WPA2, 20 MHz width, AP isolation off, long DHCP lease.
- Disable client/AP isolation (Eero: advanced network; others: "AP isolation" in wireless settings) — it must be off for smart devices.
- Enable mDNS/Bonjour forwarding, since some mesh systems block it and it is used for discovery during setup.
- Set 20 MHz channel width — wider channels hurt IoT range and compatibility.
- Use static DHCP reservations by MAC to eliminate renewal disconnects.
Why 2.4 GHz and 20 MHz specifically#
Two settings do most of the work, and it helps to know why. Smart appliances use 2.4 GHz exclusively because it travels farther and penetrates cabinetry and steel far better than 5 GHz — the appliance would rather have a slow, reliable link than a fast, fragile one, and it needs almost no bandwidth anyway. The 20 MHz channel-width rule follows the same priority: a 40 MHz channel is faster but noisier and shorter-range on the crowded 2.4 GHz band, and several appliance radios simply handshake unreliably on it. Forcing 20 MHz trades throughput you will never use for the range and stability the appliance actually needs. Once you internalize that appliances want reach and reliability over speed, the whole settings list — 2.4 GHz, 20 MHz, no band steering, no isolation — reads as one coherent goal rather than a random checklist.
