What Matter actually is#

Matter (formerly Project CHIP) is a shared language devices and controllers speak. Unlike proprietary platforms, it is open and royalty-free, so any maker can implement it without licensing fees. Technically, it runs over Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth devices like appliances (or Thread for low-power sensors), the appliance implements a standardized device model (a "Laundry Washer" with attributes like cycle status and remaining time), and any Matter controller — a HomePod, Echo, Nest Hub, or SmartThings hub — can discover and control it, with end-to-end encryption required.

Why appliances need it#

Today each brand is its own island: a Samsung fridge, LG washer, GE oven, and Bosch [dishwasher](/blog/repair-or-replace-dishwasher) mean four separate apps, four logins, four notification setups. Matter consolidates that into a single app of your choice. The appliance device types Matter defines — washer, dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher, oven, cooktop, range hood — each carry mandatory attributes (a washer must report cycle status and time) plus optional ones (spin speed).

Brand timelines#

Samsung is most aggressive: a SmartThings-hub Matter bridge for existing appliances (limited command set), then native Matter on select new refrigerators and washers, then its full lineup. LG has announced a ThinQ bridge via firmware and native Matter on later models. Bosch targets Matter on new dishwashers, ovens, and cooktops, but existing Home Connect devices are not expected to get it. GE and Whirlpool have no public appliance timelines yet. Broadly, widespread Matter appliances are a 2027-2028 story.

What existing owners need to know#

Most current appliances will not get Matter — it needs a compatible chipset they lack. Samsung is the exception, where some recent SmartThings hubs can bridge existing Samsung appliances to Matter controllers with a reduced command set. Should you wait to buy? No — Matter changes the connectivity layer, not the appliance; a fridge still cools and a washer still washes. Buy the best appliance for your needs now, and if cross-platform matters to you, choose Samsung for the earliest timeline or simply use Alexa or Google Home, which already reach every major brand. And Matter will not fix Wi-Fi dropouts on its own: it defines what commands exist, not how strong your signal is — a Matter washer on weak Wi-Fi disconnects like any other.

Repair implications#

From a repair standpoint Matter changes little in the hardware: a Matter appliance's Wi-Fi module is similar in cost and failure mode to today's proprietary ones. The difference is software — updates come through the Matter protocol rather than brand-specific systems, which could cut firmware-related service calls if that mechanism proves more robust. The bigger prediction is fewer "the app does not work" visits — currently about 15% of smart-appliance service calls — because Matter can shorten the chain from appliance-to-brand-cloud-to-voice-cloud-to-assistant down to appliance-to-local-controller-to-assistant, leaning on local network communication with less cloud dependency.

The practical takeaway for now#

Strip away the hype and Matter's near-term impact on you is modest but real. If you are buying today, it is not a reason to wait — the appliance you would buy for Matter in two years will cool, wash, or bake no better than the one you can buy now, and the brands with the earliest support already give you broad cross-platform control through Alexa and Google Home anyway. If you already own smart appliances, assume they will not gain Matter unless you have a recent Samsung setup that can bridge them, and do not let that bother you: your brand app and the existing integrations keep working exactly as before. The honest summary is that Matter is a promising simplification of the plumbing behind smart appliances, not a new capability in the appliances themselves.
