Matter (formerly Project CHIP — Connected Home over IP) is the connectivity standard backed by Apple, Amazon, Google, and Samsung that promises to end smart home fragmentation. For smart appliances, Matter means one connectivity protocol that works with every voice assistant and every smart home platform.

What Matter Actually Is#

Matter is a communication protocol — a language that devices and controllers speak. Unlike proprietary protocols (SmartThings, ThinQ, SmartHQ), Matter is open-source and royalty-free. Any manufacturer can implement it without licensing fees or platform-specific certification.

How it works technically:

• Matter runs over Wi-Fi (for high-bandwidth devices like appliances) or Thread (for low-power devices like sensors)
• The appliance implements Matter's device model (e.g., "Laundry Washer" with standardized attributes like cycle status, remaining time, temperature)
• Any Matter controller (Apple HomePod, Amazon Echo, Google Nest Hub, Samsung SmartThings) can discover and control the appliance
• End-to-end encryption is mandatory — no unencrypted commands or data

Why Matter Is Needed for Appliances#

Today, each brand has its own ecosystem:

• 2026: Select new refrigerators and washers with native Matter support
• 2027: Full appliance lineup with Matter

LG:

• 2026: ThinQ bridge for existing appliances via firmware update (announced, not yet delivered)
• 2027: New models with native Matter

GE/Haier:

• No public timeline for Matter in appliances as of mid-2026
• SmartHQ continues as primary platform

Bosch/BSH:

• 2027: Home Connect via Matter for new dishwashers, ovens, and cooktops
• Existing Bosch Home Connect devices are not expected to receive Matter updates

Whirlpool:

What Existing Smart Appliance Owners Need to Know#

Will my current smart appliance get Matter support? Unlikely for most models. Matter requires specific hardware (a Matter-compatible chipset) that most current appliances do not have. Samsung is the exception — some 2024-2025 SmartThings Hub models can act as a Matter bridge, exposing existing Samsung appliances to Matter controllers with a reduced command set.

Should I wait for Matter appliances before buying? No. Matter will not change the core appliance (refrigerator still cools, washer still washes). It changes the connectivity layer. Buy the best appliance for your needs now. If Matter matters to you, buy Samsung — they have the earliest Matter timeline.

Will Matter fix Wi-Fi disconnect issues? Not directly. Matter defines what commands are available, not how reliable the Wi-Fi connection is. A Matter washer on a weak Wi-Fi signal will disconnect just like a SmartThings washer. However, Matter-over-Thread (for future appliance sensors) is more reliable than Wi-Fi for always-connected devices.

Matter and Repair Implications#

From a repair perspective, Matter does not change the hardware significantly. The Wi-Fi module in a Matter appliance is similar in cost and failure mode to current proprietary modules. The difference is software: Matter firmware updates come from the Matter protocol, not from brand-specific OTA systems. This could reduce firmware-related service calls if Matter's update mechanism is more robust than current brand systems.

Key prediction: Matter will reduce "app doesn't work" service calls (currently ~15% of smart appliance service visits) by simplifying the connectivity chain.
