Why LG ThinQ dryer won't connect#
An LG dryer usually fails to connect for one of two reasons: it is the unit tucked farthest from the router in the laundry room, so its 2.4 GHz signal is marginal, or a safety interlock is holding remote start back until someone confirms the drum is clear at the machine. Between them they cover most reports. The rest of the table fills in the picture — a phone stuck on a 5 GHz network, a Wi-Fi button that never reached pairing mode, an app or firmware that is behind, and the occasional LG cloud hiccup. Rule those out in turn; the dryer's own board is rarely the thing keeping it off ThinQ.
Why LG ThinQ dryer won't connect, cause by cause#
LG ThinQ dryer pairs on the 2.4 GHz band only. Most "won't connect" reports are network-side, not a broken appliance — here is what actually blocks the link.
| Why it won't connect | What's happening | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Dryer farther from the router | a dryer often sits in a corner or against an outside wall for its vent, putting it farther from the router than the washer, so its 2.4 GHz link is the first to drop | add a mesh point near the dryer or relocate the router toward the laundry area |
| Wi-Fi control not held into pairing mode | the LG dryer advertises for pairing only after its Wi-Fi control is held until the Wi-Fi light blinks | press and hold the dryer Wi-Fi button until the Wi-Fi indicator blinks, then add it |
| Remote Start blocked for safety | a dryer will not remote-start unless it is left on the Remote Start setting with the door closed, so a connected-but-will-not-start dryer is a safety interlock, not a Wi-Fi fault | enable Remote Start on the dryer and close the door to allow app control |
| 5 GHz-only or band-steered network | the dryer radio joins 2.4 GHz only, so a 5 GHz-only network — or a combined name that steers setup to 5 GHz — never shows the dryer during pairing | put the phone on the 2.4 GHz network (split the bands if they share one name) before adding the dryer |
| LG cloud outage | an LG server outage lets the dryer join Wi-Fi but leaves the account link pending | check the platform service status and retry once it clears |
| Outdated app | a stale LG ThinQ build is missing the current onboarding profile for the dryer | update the app, then reopen add-appliance and re-add the dryer |
Network security: some appliance radios cannot join a WPA3-only network — set the router to WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode so LG ThinQ dryer can pair.

Re-pair LG ThinQ dryer step by step#
Delete a half-registered dryer from ThinQ before retrying, so the app is not stuck part-way through the last attempt. Hold the dryer's Wi-Fi button until the Wi-Fi light blinks, then open ThinQ, tap Add Product, pick Dryer, and follow the prompts straight through. Because a dryer often shares the far corner of the room with the washer, keep the phone on the 2.4 GHz network throughout — the weaker the spot, the less forgiving the handshake is of a phone that wanders onto 5 GHz.
For remote operation, remember that many LG dryers will not start from the app until Remote Start is enabled and the door is shut; a safety interlock deliberately blocks a cold start otherwise. If the dryer connects, shows online, and still throws a fault code or stops mid-cycle, the issue has moved from the network to the machine — read the dryer's own error-code guide for that specific code, and handle the washer, refrigerator, dishwasher or oven the same way when their apps flag something.
LG ThinQ dryer connection questions#
Why will LG ThinQ not connect to my LG dryer?#
Most often the dryer is the far laundry unit on a weak 2.4 GHz signal, or your phone is on a 5 GHz network during setup. Add a mesh node near the laundry area, put the phone on 2.4 GHz, and run Add Product again.
How do I put an LG dryer into Wi-Fi pairing mode?#
Press and hold the dryer's Wi-Fi button until the Wi-Fi indicator blinks. Once it is blinking the dryer is broadcasting, so open ThinQ and start Add Product before the pairing window times out.
Does an LG dryer need a 2.4 GHz network for ThinQ?#
Yes. Like the rest of the LG line the dryer pairs on 2.4 GHz only, so the band has to be present and the phone has to be joined to it during setup. A 5 GHz-only network will not work.
My LG dryer is connected but ThinQ will not start it — why?#
Remote Start has to be enabled and the door closed before the app can run the dryer, and a safety interlock blocks a remote cold start otherwise. Set Remote Start at the machine, shut the door, and try again.
Why does my garage LG dryer keep dropping off ThinQ?#
A garage or far-corner dryer sits at the edge of Wi-Fi range, so the 2.4 GHz link keeps fading. A mesh node placed near the laundry area steadies the connection much better than moving the router.
Do I need Remote Start on to run my LG dryer from the app?#
Yes for starting a cycle remotely — Remote Start must be on and the door shut. Without it ThinQ still reports status and cycle-end alerts, but it will not begin a dry on its own.
