Most likely a gas connection behind the stove has loosened, or a burner is only partially igniting and letting raw gas escape — a faulty gas valve, a damaged burner tube or orifice, or an oven safety valve issue can also leak gas, but treat any strong gas smell as an emergency before diagnosing anything.
Emergency protocol#
If you smell gas strongly: do NOT flip any electrical switches or use phones inside. Do NOT light matches or use lighters. Turn off the gas at the shutoff valve, ventilate by opening windows, and if the smell is strong, leave the house and call the gas company or emergency services from outside. Working through the causes#
Loose gas connection (most common). The flexible gas connector behind the stove can loosen over time, especially after the stove has been moved for cleaning. With the gas off, check the connection where the line meets the stove and have it resealed and leak-tested — a smell strongest behind the unit points here. Burner not fully igniting (common). If a knob sits slightly out of the off position, or a burner lights on only one side of the ring, raw gas escapes unburned. Clean the burner ports so the whole ring lights, and make sure each knob returns fully to off. Faulty gas valve (occasional). An internal valve that does not fully close when the burner is off allows a slow leak, more common on older Hotpoint models. The valve is serviced or replaced so it seats completely. Damaged burner tube or orifice (occasional). A cracked burner tube or a damaged orifice can leak gas before it reaches the burner head. Inspect the burner assemblies for visible cracks or corrosion and replace damaged parts. Oven safety valve issue (occasional). The oven safety valve should open only once the igniter reaches operating temperature. A malfunctioning valve can let small amounts of gas through, producing a smell during oven use. The safety valve is checked.
