Google Home Smart Appliance Control

Google Home and Google Assistant integrate with smart appliances from Samsung, LG, GE, and Whirlpool through the Google Home app. Google's "Works with Google Home" certification means the appliance brand has built a direct integration — no third-party bridges needed.

Google Home vs Alexa for Appliances#

Google Home and Alexa support similar appliance control, but with key differences:

LG has a particularly deep Google integration — LG ThinQ appliances appear natively in Google Home without needing a separate skill link. Samsung and GE require linking their brand account within Google Home.

Setup by Brand#

Samsung SmartThings + Google Home:

1. Google Home app → Add → Set up device → Works with Google → Search "SmartThings"
2. Link Samsung account → authorize access
3. Samsung appliances appear in Google Home automatically
4. Assign to rooms for contextual commands ("Hey Google, start the kitchen dishwasher")

LG ThinQ + Google Home:

1. Google Home app → Add → Set up device → Works with Google → Search "LG ThinQ"
2. Link LG account
3. LG appliances appear with full control — LG provides more Google Home commands than any other brand
4. Nest Hub displays show <a href="https://www.lg.com/us/support" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">LG appliance</a> status cards with remaining time, temperature, and cycle stage

GE SmartHQ + Google Home:

1. Google Home → Works with Google → Search "GE Appliances" or "SmartHQ"

Whirlpool + Google Home:

1. Google Home → Works with Google → Search "Whirlpool"
2. Link Whirlpool account (same credentials as the Whirlpool app)

Voice Commands That Work#

Refrigerator:

• "Hey Google, what's the fridge temperature?" — Returns current temp
• "Hey Google, set the fridge to 37 degrees" — Adjusts target temp
• "Hey Google, turn on power cool" — Activates rapid cooling (Samsung/LG)

Washer:

• "Hey Google, start the washer" — Requires remote start enabled + loaded
• "Hey Google, how much time is left on the wash?" — Returns remaining time
• "Hey Google, pause the washer" — Pauses mid-cycle (LG only)

Dryer:

• "Hey Google, start the dryer on normal cycle"
• "Hey Google, is the dryer done?" — Returns status

Oven:

• "Hey Google, preheat the oven to 375" — Remote preheat with safety check
• "Hey Google, set a timer for 30 minutes" — This is a Google timer, not an oven timer
• "Hey Google, what temperature is the oven?" — Returns current vs target temp

Dishwasher:

• "Hey Google, start the dishwasher"
• "Hey Google, is the dishwasher done?"

Nest Hub Appliance Dashboard#

If you have a Google Nest Hub (display), smart appliances show status cards on the home screen. You can see:

• Washer/dryer cycle stage and time remaining
• Refrigerator current temperature
• Oven preheat progress
• Dishwasher cycle status

This visual feedback is a significant advantage over voice-only smart speakers. You glance at the Nest Hub in the kitchen and see all appliance statuses without asking.

Common Google Home Issues#

"Hey Google, that device hasn't been set up yet" The appliance is not linked in Google Home. Go to Google Home app → Add → Set up device → Works with Google → re-link the brand account. This often happens after a Google Home app update or a brand app password change.

"Something went wrong, try again in a few seconds" Cloud communication failure between Google and the brand server. Check: (1) the brand app shows the appliance online, (2) your internet works, (3) try again in 5 minutes — brand servers occasionally have downtime.

"I can find your [appliance] but I'm unable to control it right now" The appliance is discovered but the command is not supported. This happens when you try a command the brand has not implemented. For example, "set the dishwasher to Eco mode" — most brands only support start/stop for dishwashers, not mode selection via voice.

Google Home Routines for Appliances#

Google Home Routines let you chain appliance commands with other actions:

"Good Morning" routine: "Hey Google, good morning" → turns on kitchen lights + reads fridge temperature + reports any appliance alerts from overnight.

"Leaving Home" routine: "Hey Google, I'm leaving" → checks if the oven is on (alerts you) + reports washer/dryer status so you know if cycles are running.

These routines add practical value to smart appliance connectivity — especially the "leaving home" oven check, which prevents leaving the house with the oven on.

Privacy and Data#

Google Home collects appliance usage data (when you run cycles, temperature preferences, usage frequency). This data is stored in your Google account and used for Google's aggregate analytics. Review and manage this data at myactivity.google.com under "Home & Nest."
