The short answer: almost none. As of 2026, Apple HomeKit has extremely limited support for major home appliances. Unlike smart lights, locks, and thermostats — where HomeKit has deep integration — appliances like refrigerators, washers, dryers, and ovens are largely absent from the HomeKit ecosystem.
Current HomeKit Appliance Support (2026)#
| Brand | HomeKit Support | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | No | SmartThings only (Alexa, Google) |
| LG | No | ThinQ only (Alexa, Google) |
| GE | No | SmartHQ only (Alexa, Google) |
| Whirlpool | No | Whirlpool app only (Alexa, Google) |
| Bosch | No | Home Connect only (Alexa, Google) |
| Miele | No | Miele@mobile only |
| KitchenAid | No | Whirlpool platform |
| Electrolux | No | Electrolux app only |
Zero major appliance brands support HomeKit directly. This is not a temporary gap — it reflects a fundamental challenge with Apple's certification requirements.

Why Appliances Do Not Support HomeKit#
1. Apple's Security Requirements Are Stringent HomeKit certification requires Apple's HAP (HomeKit Accessory Protocol) with end-to-end encryption. Appliance manufacturers would need to implement Apple's security stack on their control boards — a significant engineering investment for hardware that uses low-power microcontrollers not designed for Apple's encryption overhead.
2. Appliance Interactions Are Complex HomeKit was designed for binary devices (on/off) and simple parameters (brightness, temperature). Appliances have complex multi-step interactions: select cycle → set options → confirm → start. This does not map cleanly to HomeKit's device model. A washer is not a light switch.
3. Safety Certification Complexity Any remote-start capability for an oven or gas appliance requires safety certifications (UL, CSA). Adding another control pathway (HomeKit) requires re-certifying the safety system for that pathway. Brands have already invested in Alexa and Google certification — adding a third is expensive with a smaller user base.
The Matter Protocol Solution#
Matter (formerly Project CHIP) is the industry protocol designed to solve cross-platform compatibility. Matter-over-Thread and Matter-over-Wi-Fi allow devices to work with HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings simultaneously through a single integration.
Current Matter appliance status (2026):
- Samsung has announced Matter support for select 2026 refrigerators and washers — not yet shipping
- LG has Matter support planned for 2027 models
- GE has no public Matter timeline for appliances
- Bosch/BSH has announced Home Connect via Matter for 2027
What Matter means for Apple users: Once appliance brands ship Matter-compatible models, those appliances will appear in the Apple Home app automatically. No HomeKit-specific engineering required from the brand — Matter handles the translation. Apple HomePod and Apple TV serve as Matter controllers.

Current Workarounds for Apple Users#
1. Homebridge (DIY, requires technical setup) Homebridge is an open-source Node.js server that bridges non-HomeKit devices to HomeKit. Community plugins exist for Samsung SmartThings, LG ThinQ, and Whirlpool appliances. This requires a Raspberry Pi or always-on computer running Homebridge.
Limitations: unofficial, may break with brand app updates, limited command support.
2. Shortcuts + Brand App Apple Shortcuts can trigger actions in brand apps. Samsung SmartThings and LG ThinQ support Siri Shortcuts — you can create a shortcut "Start the washer" that opens SmartThings and triggers a pre-configured automation. This is not true HomeKit integration but provides Siri voice control.
3. Use Alexa or Google for Appliances, HomeKit for Everything Else Many Apple-centric homes use HomeKit for lights, locks, and thermostats but keep an Alexa or Google Home device specifically for appliance control. This is the most reliable current solution.
What to Expect#
Matter will eventually solve the HomeKit appliance gap, but the timeline is 2027-2028 before Matter-enabled appliances are widely available. Until then, Apple users who want voice-controlled appliances need either Homebridge, Siri Shortcuts, or a secondary voice assistant (Alexa/Google).
Our recommendation for Apple households: Do not choose or avoid a smart appliance based on HomeKit compatibility. No current appliance supports it, and Matter will make it irrelevant within 2-3 years. Choose your smart appliance based on the brand's own app quality and reliability — SmartThings (Samsung), ThinQ (LG), SmartHQ (GE), or Home Connect (Bosch).
