The defrost drain, in detail#
Ice forms in the defrost drain tube, so meltwater from each defrost cycle backs up into the freezer compartment and eventually runs out onto the floor. On a top-freezer model it produces a distinctive symptom: water appearing in the fresh food section below. There is nowhere for the meltwater to go, it pools at the bottom of the freezer, and it overflows through the partition or the door seams into the compartment underneath. Clearing the drain fixes that permanently — patching the symptom does not.
Access on a top-freezer ART318FFDS is behind the rear back panel inside the freezer: 4-6 screws, and the drain opening is at the bottom of the evaporator housing. Side-by-side ASI2575GRS models put it in the same place behind the freezer back panel.

The other four#
Inlet valve drip. The valve (Whirlpool W10408179) develops a slow leak at the diaphragm seal after 7-10 years, dripping behind the refrigerator. It is easy to mistake for a supply line problem because the water lands in the same place.
Drain pan. The plastic pan under the compressor collects defrost water for evaporation. It cracks with age, or it overflows when there is more defrost water than it was designed for — which is itself a hint that something upstream is producing too much.
Supply line connection. The compression fitting where the line meets the back of the refrigerator works loose over time from vibration. Tightening it costs nothing.
Door gasket. A worn seal lets warm air in, and the excess condensation drips down the interior walls and pools at the bottom of the fresh food section. This is the one people misread as a plumbing fault.
