Amana Refrigerator PO: Power Outage Recorded

PO is an informational code, not a malfunction. The control board detected that AC power was lost and restored. PO alerts you that the refrigerator was without cooling for an unknown duration and food safety assessment is needed.

What Happens During a Power Outage

When power fails, the compressor stops and the sealed compartments maintain temperature through insulation alone. A well-sealed Amana refrigerator (door kept closed) maintains safe temperatures for:

• Full freezer: Up to 48 hours
• Half-full freezer: Up to 24 hours
• Fresh food section: About 4 hours

These times drop dramatically each time the door is opened. Amana's budget-grade door gaskets and thinner insulation (compared to premium brands) mean these times may be on the shorter end of the range.

Food Safety Check When PO Appears

Freezer

• Items still at 0 degrees F or below: safe
• Items with ice crystals: can be refrozen safely
• Fully thawed items above 40 degrees F for 2+ hours: discard meat, poultry, fish, dairy, prepared foods
• Fruits, bread, hard cheese: safe to refreeze if they smell normal

Fresh Food Section

• Below 40 degrees F: all items safe
• Above 40 degrees F for 2+ hours: discard perishables (raw/cooked meat, dairy, cut produce, opened condiments)
• Whole fruits, intact vegetables, butter, hard cheese, unopened condiments: usually safe

Clearing PO

Press any button to acknowledge and dismiss. Most Amana models auto-clear PO after 24 hours of continuous power. Reset the clock if your model displays time.

PO Without a Known Outage

If PO appears but you did not experience an outage:

• Loose plug: Someone bumped the refrigerator or cleaned behind it
• GFCI trip: Refrigerators should NOT be on GFCI outlets — plug into a standard outlet
• Shared circuit breaker: If the refrigerator shares a circuit with other appliances, total draw may trip the breaker
• Faulty outlet: Intermittent contact in a worn outlet

Protecting Against Extended Outages

• Keep the freezer at least 3/4 full (frozen water bottles as thermal mass)
• Consider a plug-in power outage alarm ($15-30) that alerts by phone
• Set temperature to coldest before anticipated outages
• Never open doors during an outage unless necessary

No Repair Needed

PO requires no repair, no parts, and no service call. It is purely informational. If the refrigerator resumes normal cooling after acknowledging PO, everything is functioning correctly.
