Amana Refrigerator LO: Low Temperature Alert — Freezer or Fresh Food Too Cold
LO means the temperature sensor detected a temperature below the programmed low-limit threshold. In the freezer, this typically means below -10 degrees F. In the fresh food section, below 28 degrees F (items are freezing).
What LO Means for Your Food
Unlike HI (which is a food safety emergency), LO usually means over-cooling:
- Frozen beverages: Cans and bottles may burst from expansion. Remove immediately.
- Frozen produce: Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and other high-water-content vegetables are ruined once frozen. Cell walls rupture and the item becomes mushy upon thawing.
- Frozen dairy: Milk separates, yogurt texture changes, cheese crumbles. Most dairy items are still safe but texture is degraded.
- Frozen medications: Some medications must be stored at controlled room temperature or refrigerator temperature. Check manufacturer guidelines.

Why LO Triggers
1. Thermostat Set Too Low (25%)
The simplest cause: the temperature setting was accidentally turned to the coldest position. On Amana models with a dial control, the dial can be bumped when loading or removing items. Check the thermostat setting and adjust to the recommended position (usually "4" or "5" on a 1-7 scale).
2. Damper Stuck Open (Fresh Food Section, 25%)
The motorized air damper between the freezer and fresh food section controls cold air flow. If stuck open, continuous freezer-temperature air floods the fresh food section, freezing everything.
Diagnosis: If the freezer is at correct temperature but the fresh food section is below 28 degrees F, the damper is likely stuck open. Listen at the vent opening for the damper motor — it should open and close periodically.
3. Thermistor Reading Incorrectly High (20%)
If the thermistor reads warmer than actual temperature (partially degraded), the board thinks the compartment is warmer than it is and over-cools to compensate. The actual temperature drops below the low-limit, triggering LO.
Test: Compare the thermistor reading (in diagnostic mode) against an independent thermometer. If the board shows 40 degrees F but your thermometer reads 28 degrees F, the thermistor is reading 12 degrees high — replace it.
4. Control Board Defrost Timer Failure (15%)
If the defrost cycle runs too infrequently, the evaporator coils over-produce cold air during normal cycles. The compressor runs longer and cools more aggressively than needed.
5. Compressor Not Cycling Off (15%)
A stuck compressor relay or a board that fails to de-energize the compressor circuit causes continuous cooling. The temperature drops indefinitely until LO triggers.
Diagnosis: Is the compressor running constantly without cycling off? Normal compressor duty cycle: 40-80% (runs for 20-40 minutes, off for 10-20 minutes). If it runs continuously for hours, the control circuit is faulty.
Clearing LO
Adjust the thermostat to a warmer setting if it was too cold. If a component has failed, LO clears when the temperature rises above the threshold after repair.

Amana-Specific Damper Design
Amana uses a simplified damper system compared to premium brands. Some Amana models use a gravity-assist damper (no motor — relies on cold air weight to naturally close when the compressor cycles off). These gravity dampers can stick open if ice forms on the pivot point. Melt any ice with a hairdryer (on low setting) and verify free movement.
